Asenovgrad is a town in South Bulgaria. It is situated in Plovdiv province and is 19 km south of Plovdiv. Asenovgrad is the biggest town in Rhodope mountains, second after Plovdiv in the province and is also an administrative centre of Asenovgrad municipality. The city is situated in river Chaya gorge (the river is also known as the Chepelare river or Asenitsa) when the river exits the Rhodope mountains and goes to the Thracian lowlands. Because of that Asenovgrad municipality is naturally connected with Central Bulgaria, Central Rhodope mountains and White Sea. Through its territory passes one of the most important transport corridors to Greece: Plovdiv-Smolyan-Xanti. Because of the central geographical situation of the city since ancient times it was important trade centre.
The climate is pleasant with cool summer and soft winter. In Asenovgrad there is a phenomenon called “vechernik” (literally means “by evening“) - a breeze, that appears when the night falls and stops in about 10 am. The cause is the different air heating between the plain and mountain areas. Vechernik is an excellent regulator of the wine fermentation and also one of the reasons Asenovgrad to become vine-growing and wine centre. The biggest quantity of the rainfalls is in May and June, and the less – in September and October. The soil is clayey and sandy and easy to cultivate. Except river Chaya, through the city flows the river Yugovska. The city is an important centre of religious and cultural tourism. Very attractive are tourist routes to monasteries “Sveta Petka”, “Sveti Kirik”.
Around the city there are 5 monasteries, 15 churches, 58 chaples, historical, ethnographical, palaentological, and wine museums. In 2 km away from the twon there is Asen's fortress. It is a fortress, situated in the Rhodope mountains and connected with Asenovgrad through 2 km long road. The fortress dates since Thracian times and in the middle ages its position becomes strategical.
