Varna is the biggest town in North Bulgaria , and it is a centre of province and municipality with the same name. Varna is a marine city with a population of 360 423 citizens. Varna is called “the marine capital of Bulgaria”.
Varna is a big cultural centre with developed sea tourism. There are many cultural events like the International theatre festival “Varna summer”, International music festival “Varna summer”, International ballet competition, International Jazz festival, Movie festval “Love is folly”, International folklore festival, the week of the summer and many others. In city`s hystorical museum is kept the oldest gold treasure in the world
In year 1972, during construction site Varna halcolite necropolis is found and dates since 4200 years B.C. The oldest golden treasure in human history was found ,altogether with items of gold, silver, bronze, clay and flint.
Where nowadays is the old part of town - coast of Varna Gulf, used to be the fortress Odessos. Odessos is the greek translation of the older name of the town - Varna. The town was founded around 570 BC.
In year 1389 Varna is ruled by the Ottomans. On November 10th year 1444 united polish-hungarian crusaders lead by king Vladislav III, called Vladislav III Varnenchik, and transylvanian voivode Yanush Huniyadi, beaten by the Ottomansобедени от османците. Today in the "marine capital" there is mausoleum of the Christian Leader, king Vladislav III.
According to an inquiry among readers of "24 hours" newspaper, website dariknews.bg and listeners to Darik radio station, Varna is the best town to live in in Bulgaria. The classification was based on voting by citizens and also based on 40 criteria brought by the organizators. The voting lasted for 3 months during 2007. Varna won the contest again in 2008.
The climate is marine, relatively soft during the warm seasons. Average annual temperature is 1.7 °С, average in july is 22.8 °С. Average annual rainfalls are 498 mm, with maximum in June and November, and minimum in february. Varna is very for balneological recreational treatment. Usually in the period of spring and autumn, the temperature varies around 18-31 C, while during July-August it averages around 22 °C. In the summer the water temperature is around 20 °C and in the hottest days the sand temperature can reach up to 60 °C. Average height of the waves in the gulf is about 61 cm
