Population of Targovishte city was 163,382 people in year 2003 – 45,9% of province's population. In the last five years there is a tendency of demographic decrease , typical for Targovishte province and Northeast Bulgaria as well.
The climate is humid continental. During the winter blow cold northeastern winds. The summer is hot and dry. Northwestern and southwestern winds are dominant. Northwestern winds blow much longer and are stronger with average speed of 4-5 metres per second. Continuance of the sunshine is about 2250 hours per year. Annual average temperature is 10.7 °C. Quantity of the rainfalls is much higher in January and February and less – in June and July. Main maximum is in May (65-90 mm), and main minimum is in February (29-38 mm).
Archaeological researches show that, this area was inhabited in 5th -4th century B.C. Around the town are found remains of Thracian settlements from 5th-3rd century B.C., Roman settlement 2nd -4th century B.C., settlement and fortress , dated from early Byzantium epoch 5th -6th century. Remains are found from a First Bulgarian Empire (Sborishte Fortress), a village and a fortress from Second Bulgarian State. First mentioned in 1573 in Ottoman tax registers, it was already an administrative centre in 1658
