Bulgaria is on the border between the humid and Mediterranean climate zones. In the north part of the country the climate is humid continental, with four seasons, while in south there is Mediterranean climate influence.
Bulgaria has five distinct climatic regions – humid continental, transitional between humid continental and Mediterranean continental, Mediterranean continental, by the Black Sea and mountainous. For the establishment of the first three of them main factor is the latitude, of the mountainous – the relief, and the Black Sea region was formed under the influence of the Black Sea.
Average annual temperature is about - 3 C˚ on Musala peak and 14 C˚ in Sandanski city. During the winter in North Bulgaria average temperature is about - 1, -2°С and in South Bulgaria is about 0°С. Through the summer average temperature is about 20-22°С.
The winds varied, but constant are the winds from the Northwest and from West – through the summer they set in warm weather, and through the winter they cause rainfalls. Often there are Northeastern winds – cold in the winter and hot in the summer. Annual average quantity of the rainfalls is 450 to 1300 mm /the most – in May and June, in high mountains – during the winter/. Snow cover stays up to 10 days /by the Black Sea/ to above 200 days /in high mountains/. In the mountains above 1500 metres the climate is typical for the highlands – low temperatures, heavy rains and long snow-retention. Average annual air temperature is about 10,5°.С. In the winter it snows mostly in the mountains. Snow cover stays less in the Eastern part of the country. In the mountains it stays longer – up to 190 days. Recently anomalies are observed – dry or wet summers, in alternating years, and relatively warm and dry winters and long and snowbound winters.
